For assignment 2, we were to choose a brand and conduct user surveys and research on said brand before delving into creating user personas and user journey maps. We were supposed to choose brands from our first assignment as we had already conducted pretty thorough research on them however, I decided it wasn't a right fit for me (alongside the fact the brans were decently niche) and switched lanes! In the end, I chose Uniqlo because I frequent their stores and I find their brand identity to be quite strong, emphasising on modern minimalism with a Japanese flair.
USER RESEARCH
I conducted user research through the help of surveys, where we had to research over 50 participants who actively responded and aided us in our research. I did my survey on Google Forms and my friends and family members were kind enough to share them with their own circles, thus I managed to achieve over 50 respondents in no time!
I combed through and analysed the results and based on those, my next steps were in action. I was to:
- Create 3 User Personas based on my survey results
- Create a User Journey Map reflecting my user personas
- Start ideating concepts and designs for my designed retail store
It was very interesting creating user personas as though they were based on real people's preferences, the user personas we made were not real people. It was a bit like creating a character for a story. You have to think about their likes and dislikes and you have to try and get into their brain and see how they would act and react (even though they aren't real people!). It was a lot of fun and it was very new aspect of design that I wasn't fully aware of yet.
Then based on the user personas I created, it was time to ideate ideas for my retail store and create user journey maps for my users so I would roughly know how they would experience the store design I was proposing. You have to think about user's feelings as they wander through the stores, their circumstances, what makes them come to the store in the first place... All of that and so much more! It was truly eye-opening!
