INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT

Brief:

We need to synthesize the knowledge gained in tasks 1, 2, and 3 for application in this final project. We will integrate visual assets and refine the prototype into a complete, working, and functional product experience.

THE DEVELOPMENT

i) Illustrator Process

My groupmate, Iman, began by illustrating the scenes in Adobe Illustrator, based on the existing storybook, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. In total, She created 14 scenes, each containing multiple layers for later implementation in After Effects.

ii) After Effects Process

Then she proceeded to work on the animations by importing the files from Adobe Illustrator and animating them layer by layer. She added fade effects between layer transitions, along with subtitlesvoiceovers, and background music that were child-friendly and complemented the storytelling theme.

iii) Audio Creation Process

As for me, after completing my figma prototypes (see here), I moved on to create the audio for our AR App. For this, I used Adobe Audition and applied what I learnt from my other module, Sonic Design, which also happens to be taught by Mr Razif! I recorded my voiceovers at home before downloading relevant audio tracks from Freesound to add a more immersive sound environment. Then, after exporting all my edited audio tracks from my Audition Multimedia file, I handed it over to Iman and she added the background music.

iv) Unity Process

After completing that, I moved on to the mammoth that was Unity. Thankfully though, all the assets had already been created prior, so all I had to do was make sure everything was working in gear. Before touching Unity though, I was fumbling around Vuforia Engine, making sure all the ImageTargets were ready and actually readable (I had a few that were 0 stars). Eventually though, I managed to sort that out and moved on to the actual Unity work. I started out with the Story Selection pages before moving on to the Onboarding, Quiz and finally the actual AR page. I divided the pages into individual scenes (excluding the AR scene) to ensure a clear, simplified workflow for myself. Along the way, I also made sure to fully flesh out the individual scenes to the best of my abilities, adding interactable buttons in all the scenes. Lastly, I focused on the AR scene where I added all my ImageTargets and VideoPlanes in accordance with the scenes in the book. After a few rounds of onscreen testing and confirming that the AR was working as intended, I used a cable to build and run the application on my phone.

REFLECTION

This module was definitely one of the hardest ones for me this semester. At first, it was quite smooth sailing, especially since Mr Razif had recorded all his lessons, which were EXTREMELY helpful when creating this app from scratch. But oh boy was learning Unity a hurdle (especially when you have 5 other subjects on your hand!!) From the new coding language to just the ins and outs of how to make your assets and codes work together in practice, it was definitely a challenge!

Though, I must say, I think I've learnt a lot through this module and though our product isn't perfect, it was certainly a satisfying process of creation to make it with a satisfying outcome. I just want to say I'm grateful to Mr Razif's in depth teaching to make learning this new engine more intuitive to new learners and to my groupmate, Iman, as I really couldn't have done this without you!
